Redknapp pushes for contract talks

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is eager to sort out his future and sign a new contract with the White Hart Lane club.

The 65-year-old took over at the Premier League side in 2008 but has just one year left on his existing deal.

Redknapp believes it could prove detrimental to put off contract talks and is eager to extend his stay in north London.

The simple situation is that I have a year left on my contract and it is up to Tottenham whether they want to extend that or not, Redknapp told Sky Sports.

Things couldn t have gone better since I ve been there. We ve finished fourth twice, fifth once, quarter-finals of the Champions League and played fantastic football. It s a good club and I enjoy being at Tottenham.

It s not a case of me looking…

More stoppage time, Saudi spectre and City eye four in a row – PL talking points

Players are preparing to return to Premier League action beginning on August 11, with champions Manchester City looking to follow up an historic campaign last time.

Pep Guardiola’s side are favourites to add another title to their honour roll after last season’s Treble, though rivals will be confident of at least closing the gap.

Here, the PA news agency looks at some of the talking points ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.

City to make history… again?

No English club have won four consecutive league titles, so Manchester City stand once again on the precipice of making history.

How the team respond to last season’s remarkable Treble – whether it will be the catalyst for domination domestically and in Europe or will hang over them like a cloud – …

No problem in Russia – Kanchelskis backs World Cup hosts

Andrei Kanchelskis is confident Russia will make a success of hosting the 2018 World Cup.

The Kremlin will host the group-stage draw for the finals on Friday, with concerns over hooliganism, racism and discrimination in the country once again coming to the fore in the build-up.

Former Manchester United, Everton and Rangers favourite Kanchelskis represented both the Soviet Union and Russia during his international career and he is bullish over the prospects of a memorable tournament as Germany prepare to defend their title.

Of course, definitely [it will be] a very, very good World Cup, he told Omnisport at the signing of his book Russian Winters: The Story of Andrei Kanchelskis (deCoubertin).

I ll say it – there is no problem. I know there has been a …

Manchester City 3 Newcastle United 1: Aguero hat-trick sees pacesetters bounce back

Manchester City bounced back from their first Premier League defeat of the season with little difficulty, as Sergio Aguero again tormented Newcastle United by scoring a perfect hat-trick in a 3-1 home win at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool beat City 4-3 at Anfield last time out, but the runaway leaders rarely looked in danger of dropping further points on Saturday, Aguero taking his tally of goals against Newcastle to a whopping 14.

In the first half, the visitors looked like a team whose only plan was to sit back and keep the game goalless for as long as possible.

They managed to hold City at bay for more than half an hour, before Pep Guardiola s side deservedly ended their resistance 11 minutes prior to the break, Aguero heading in a Kevin De Bruyne cross.<…

Watford 1 Swansea City 2: Carvalhal makes winning start with stunning late turnaround

Swansea City produced a stunning turnaround to win 2-1 at Watford in new boss Carlos Carvalhal s first game in charge.

Jordan Ayew and Luciano Narsingh scored in the last five minutes to see Carvalhal make an instant impact after being named Swansea s fifth manager in two years on Thursday.

Their heroics came after Andre Carrillo had given the hosts an 11th-minute lead.

Molla Wague had a goal harshly ruled out for a soft shove on Tammy Abraham early in the second half, while substitute Andre Gray should have done better when he fired straight at Lukasz Fabianski from a one-on-one scenario shortly before Ayew s leveller.

The equaliser came from a knockdown from Oli McBurnie, and then Carvalhal s tactical switch paid dividends again, as fellow substitute…

Conte better than Mourinho – Pirlo

Andrea Pirlo believes Antonio Conte can give more to Inter than Jose Mourinho amid growing speculation the former Chelsea boss is set to replace Luciano Spalletti.

Conte is reportedly poised to take over at Inter, despite head coach Spalletti securing Champions League qualification in back-to-back Serie A seasons via a fourth-place finish this term.

Former Inter coach Mourinho was linked with a return to the club, however, Pirlo – who played under Conte at Juventus – believes the ex-Italy boss is better suited to the Nerazzurri.

In my opinion, Conte can give more than Mourinho, especially in terms of structure and agonism, Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

If he d join Inter the fans will support the team, even more, they ll be closer to the players.

Bitesize Prediction: Fiorentina vs Salernitana – 11/12/21

Market: Dusan Vlahovic to score anytime

Odds: 8/11 @

Looking to extend on what has been a real romp on home soil, Fiorentina will welcome Salernitana to the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Saturday afternoon.

Starting with the hosts, while Fiorentina might find themselves in a real uphill battle to clinch a shock top-four finish this season, they have continued to impress many across Italy since opening the 2021/22 campaign. Last seen claiming an action-packed 3-2 win against Bologna on the road, the mood in Vincenzo Italiano s camp should be at a real high. Collecting nine points from their last four Serie A contests, a run highlighted by a stunning 4-3 win against AC Milan last month, the Purples should be smelling a chance here. Winning each of their last four matc…

Real Madrid 5-2 Celta Vigo: Benzema nets hat-trick as fans treated to thriller in Bernabeu return

Karim Benzema scored a hat-trick and Eduardo Camavinga netted on his debut as Real Madrid marked their return to the Santiago Bernabeu with a thrilling 5-2 win over Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Madrid last played at their iconic home on March 1, 2020, before remodelling work began on the stadium, and fans were treated to a real spectacle.

Twice Celta led in the first half, with Benzema s first strike sandwiched between Santi Mina s opener and Franco Cervi s rather fortuitous tap-in.

But Benzema nodded Los Blancos level again early in the second half before setting up in-form Vinicius Junior with a defence-splitting pass.

Camavinga put the game beyond Celta soon after his introduction from the bench and Benzema completed his treble from the spot after some dazzl…

Premier League talking points as Newcastle look to maintain impressive start

The Premier League is up and running after the opening round of fixtures last week.

Here, the PA news agency looks at this weekend’s talking points.

Toon to take advantage?

Newcastle got off to a flying start with a thumping 5-1 win over Aston Villa and can really send a message about their top-four credentials when they travel to a Manchester City side not so fresh from their Super Cup success in Greece on Wednesday night. Kevin De Bruyne’s injury absence could really start to hit home for the champions.

More dilemmas for Poch

Chelsea’s encouraging second-half display in their 1-1 draw against Liverpool seemed to show Mauricio Pochettino is already starting to get a tune from their expensively and hastily-assembled squad. Now the Argentinian has to facto…
